God - Work - Education

The three words lived out by the children of Liberia Mission Inc. (LMI) daily. (An excerpt of highlights from 2011 by Michaela Pease, Associate Director of Development)

God:
  • Daily the staff and children of LMI praise God for the blessings in their lives. They have Catechism class on Saturdays and church on Sundays.
  • As Advent was approaching, house parent Brother Lawrence held a retreat for those on the mission that have been leaders in the faith. Brother Lawrence led conversations about receiving Christ, about becoming a Christian, not only how to be a Christian.
  • The Feast Day of the Immaculate Conception was celebrated with a pilgrimage on December 3rd. A few LMI staff and 15 youth attended the pilgrimage to the Catholic shrine of the Virgin Mary. During the many-hours walk, thousands of people pray the rosary until all have made it to the shrine where a Mass is celebrated.

Work:
  • Three days a week after lunch the children have work hour. They feed the animals, clean around the mission or work on the farm. This year the farm has a pineapple patch, bitterball (vegetable), watermelon, corn, eggplant and tomatoes. The farm contributes to the sustainability of LMI.
  • The days the children do not work around the mission, they now have the opportunity to learn other life-skills. Sewing class is being offered, as well as tie-dye and soap making by house parent-Ma Vic. The children have made their own clothes and also make African suits for visitors.
  • On December 8th, a ribbon cutting ceremony was held for the new basketball court located between the mission and the school. The US Ambassador, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, attended and threw the first honorary shot. The court was a project supported both by the US Self-Help Fund and LMI.

Education:
  • During this past summer, a group headed to LMI to build a computer lab. The computer lab is one-of-a-kind in the area! There are classes being offered to school and mission staff for no cost. The kids will be offered classes in the lab within the new year.
  • The new school year is always initiated with much rejoicing, praising and dancing. On a September morning’s devotion at St. Anthony of Padua School, 380 students were welcomed to the new school year. This year, 40 students wore their smiles brighter and wider as it was their first day on campus.
  • The opportunity to be a Youth Leader has been given to 18 youth at LMI. These 18 youth have accepted the role to be a leader to the other 92 children on the mission. The youth are given more responsibility during group activities, in their room and around the mission. They are expected to point out the negative and positive behaviors of their fellow brothers and sisters. Every Friday night, the 18 of them, along with a few LMI staff, work on teamwork and goals for their position. With their responsibility they are also given privileges such as movie nights in the new lab.

This is a long list and brings me happiness to share it with you. But it is you, as supporters of LMI, who should celebrate this list. It is only possible to provide such opportunities because of your support.
